Shielding Your Teeth from Decay
Sealants are an excellent way to prevent tooth decay and cavities on molars and premolars, which are particularly vulnerable due to their deep grooves and fissures.
Sealants are most commonly applied to children’s permanent molars and premolars as soon as these teeth erupt, protecting them during the cavity-prone years between ages 6 and 14. However, adults without decay or fillings in their molars can also benefit from this preventive treatment.
The application of sealants is quick and straightforward:
- The teeth are thoroughly cleaned.
- They are dried to prepare for the sealant.
- A liquid solution is applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
- The sealant is cured and hardened using a special light.
Sealants form a protective barrier that shields the enamel from plaque and acids. They can last for several years, providing long-lasting protection before a reapplication may be needed. As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface beneath it is safeguarded from decay.
It’s important to note that sealants are not a substitute for brushing, flossing, or professional dental cleanings. Maintaining proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits remain essential, as sealants do not protect between teeth.
