Oral Cancer Screening

Early Detection for a Healthy Smile

In the United States, one adult dies every hour from oral cancer. Early detection is crucial, as identifying oral cancers in their initial stages allows for more effective and less invasive treatment. When caught early, the chances of successful treatment significantly improve. In advanced stages, oral cancers are more likely to spread, requiring more complex care.

Dr. Ashley Fagan recommends scheduling an oral cancer screening at least once a year. Regular screenings play a vital role in detecting any potential concerns early.

During your screening, Dr. Fagan will carefully examine your mouth, throat, lips, gums, and tongue for abnormalities. Please inform us if you’ve experienced any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain or difficulty speaking, swallowing, or moving your jaw or tongue
  • A feeling that something is caught in your throat
  • Persistent sore throat without other sinus symptoms
  • Lumps or swelling in or around your mouth
  • Significant weight loss
  • White or red patches in your mouth
  • Mouth sores that don’t heal
  • Unexplained ear pain
  • Unexplained bleeding in your mouth

If any of these symptoms persist for more than a week without improvement, contact us immediately for a reservation.

Although anyone can develop oral cancer, several factors may increase your risk, including:

  • Being male (men are more likely to develop oral cancer than women)
  • Tobacco use in any form (increases risk sixfold)
  • Genetic predisposition to oral cancers
  • Prolonged or excessive sun exposure
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
